Hiding is dangerous, revealing is risky. The labour market experiences of people with epilepsy
It is the responsibility of employers to correctly assess a person’s competences and potential when recruiting, says Rugilė Trumpytė, Head of the Diversity Charter. They are the ones who can set an example by introducing colleagues to epilepsy and, if necessary, providing training.
Because there is so little public knowledge and myths about epilepsy, employers are worried about what will happen if a person is injured at work, or if a seizure will scare colleagues or clients. According to B. Hrytsai of Epilė, a member of the Diversity Charter, the best person to describe his or her situation is the person himself. For example, some of them could work directly with clients, because during a seizure they seem to be just daydreaming and distracted for a short time.
